Silence

I’m fairly shy, so I don’t usually counter this trend: but often, when I’m listening intently and quietly in seminar, I pay attention to who speaks, how loudly they speak, and for how long. Those who break the silence are either those who are most senior in the room, or, more generally, men. Women speak much later, more speculatively, more quietly. Why? What would it take to change this?
